What is Tai Chi?
Tai chi or taiji (pronounced “tie-chee”) is a mind-body exercise that combines slow, graceful movements, meditation, and deep breathing. It is an ancient Chinese practice that has been shown to have many health benefits, including improved balance, flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular health. Tai chi can also help to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.
The word “tai chi” literally means “supreme ultimate fist.” However, tai chi is not a martial art in the traditional sense. It is more of a moving meditation that focuses on the cultivation of internal energy, or qi (pronounced “chee”).
The movements of tai chi are performed in a slow, flowing manner, and they are often accompanied by deep breathing. This helps to relax the body and mind, and it allows for a more mindful connection to the present moment.
The movements of tai chi are based on the principles of yin and yang, which are two opposing forces that are said to be in balance in the universe. The yin movements are soft and flowing, while the yang movements are more vigorous. The goal of tai chi is to find a balance between these two forces.
There are many different styles of tai chi, but the most common are the Yang style, Chen style, and Wu style. The Yang style, which is the style I teach, is the most popular style, and it is known for its gentle and flowing movements. The Chen style is a more vigorous style, and it emphasizes the martial aspects of tai chi. The Wu style is a balanced style that combines the gentle movements of the Yang style with the vigorous movements of the Chen style.
I run indoor Yang Style Tai Chi classes for beginners in Formby, and also hold various outdoor events throughout the summer. So if you are interested in learning tai chi then please contact me today.
No matter what your age or fitness level, tai chi is a great way to improve your health and well-being. So why not give it a try?
