What is Qigong?
Qigong (pronounced “chee-gong”) is a mind-body practice that combines slow, gentle movements, meditation, and deep breathing. It is an ancient Chinese practice that predates the art of tai chi, and has been shown to have many health benefits, including improved balance, flexibility, strength, and cardiovascular health. Qigong can also help to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Qigong is purely for health and well being does not have any martial application. Qigong forms are usually easier to learn than tai chi forms and can often be practiced both standing and sitting in an armless chair.
The word “qigong” literally means “cultivation of qi.” Qi is a Chinese concept of vital energy that is said to flow through the body. Qigong practices are designed to help to improve the flow of qi, which is believed to lead to better health and well-being.
There are many different styles of qigong, but they all share some common elements. These elements include:
- Slow, gentle movements
- Deep breathing

Qigong can be practiced sitting or standing. It is a gentle practice that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and fitness levels.

How to Get Started with Qigong
If you are interested in learning qigong, then it is important to find a class that is taught by a qualified instructor. If you live in or around Formby, Merseyside, then I teach classes on Monday Mornings at Ravenmeols Community Centre, Wednesday afternoons at the Sefton Support Group on Duke Street, and Thursday afternoons at Formby Library.
Qigong is a gentle practice that can be done for as little as 5-10 minutes per day. The more often you practice, the more benefits you will experience!
